World Environmental Day 2023

World Environment Day is an international day for the environment, it is celebrated 5th of June yearly. It has become the largest global platform for environmental outreach and It is celebrated by millions of people across the world. The theme for this year 2023 is “Beat plastic pollution”. The theme focuses on solution to plastic pollution, actions on plastic pollution matters. This is a call to governments, Organisations, companies etc on ways to tackle plastic pollution and the consequence of these actions. It also serves as a reminder to every individual and collective body of their responsibilities to protect and preserve the planet. Our main focus as an organisation (Healthy Life Development Initiative) concerning this issue is to dwell more on advocacy, sensitizing and education : individuals, communities, and organizations in contributing to sustainable development and the proactive measures taken to curb excesses and end every form of this pollution. These are pressing environmental challenges and we encourage individuals and communities to take proactive steps towards environmental conservation and restoration. If adhered to, this will inspire proactive changes and foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural surroundings. Plastic pollution is one of the major wastes experienced in our home country Nigeria which has also contributed to the recent occurrence of flood issues and climate change at large. Waste management is a big issue in Nigeria because government is focused mainly on crude oil activities. There is a general poor response to environmental issues. We are calling on the government, non governmental organizations, company’s and individuals to invest in proper disposal and waste management. If achieved, this will not only save the environment, but will help the people in terms of employment, waste reduction and healthy living. It will also help in cost reduction if the waste products can be recycled to other products. There’s still need for government to introduce a curriculum starting from the primary school on environmental issues to educate the people. Reduction and subsequent end to this pollution can only
be achieved through individuals, communities, government and organizations collaboration to work towards a sustainable and thriving planet. The awareness created on environmental issues, will inspire others to take action, and be a catalyst for positive change.
The environmental cleanup, remediation, restoration etc is a wake up call to everyone starting from our homes. We are calling on everyone especially non- governmental organisations to actively participate in community initiatives and engage policymakers and advocate for sustainable practices and implementation of policies on environmental issues. These efforts will make a significant difference in preserving our environment, create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for our generations. Together we can beat plastic pollution and provide permanent solution .
